Guide

How to resize a GIF online

What the GIF resizer above does at each step, and the settings that matter when you need a specific size.

1. Pick a size

Drop a GIF into the tool. Its original dimensions fill the width and height boxes. Type a new width and the height follows automatically while “Lock aspect ratio” is on, or drag the percentage slider to scale both sides at once: 50% gives you a GIF half as wide and half as tall. For a platform, tap a preset instead; the Discord emoji preset, for example, sets 128 × 128.

2. Keep the animation intact

Every frame is resized, not just the first one, and the original frame delays are kept, so the result plays at the same speed and keeps looping. Scaling uses the Lanczos filter, which keeps edges and small text crisp when you shrink a GIF a lot. After scaling, a new 256-color palette is built from your GIF's actual colors, which avoids the banding you get when the old palette is reused. Transparent areas stay transparent.

3. Change the shape without distortion

If the new width and height have a different ratio than the original (a 16:9 clip into a square emoji, say), the tool asks how to handle the difference:

  • Crop to fill: scales until the box is covered, then trims the overflow from the center. Best for emoji and stickers.
  • Pad to fit: keeps the whole picture and adds transparent borders. Best when nothing may be cut off.
  • Stretch: forces the exact box and distorts the image. Rarely what you want.

4. Check the file size

Fewer pixels means a smaller file: dropping a 1000 × 562 GIF to 500 × 281 leaves a quarter of the pixels per frame. Compression ratios vary with colors and motion, so watch the size shown next to the preview. If a platform limit is still out of reach, these help:

  • Discord caps custom emoji at 256KB and stickers at 512KB. The GIF resizer for Discord page lists every current Discord limit with sources.
  • To hit an exact byte budget, use compress GIF, which trades colors and frame rate for size.
  • For long clips, convert GIF to MP4. A looping MP4 is usually a fraction of the GIF's size and plays almost everywhere a GIF does.

Questions

GIF Resizer FAQ

More questions? Read the full FAQ or the Discord GIF guide.

01How do I resize a GIF online?
Upload your GIF to the resizer, enter a target width and height (or pick a percentage / platform preset), then click Resize and download the result. Everything runs in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm, so there is no upload, no queue, and no watermark. Most GIFs finish in a few seconds.
02Is this GIF resizer really free?
Yes. All tools on gifresizer.org — resize, compress, convert, crop — are completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and no file limits beyond your browser's memory. Processing happens on your own device, so we have no server costs to pass on.
03How do I resize a GIF without losing quality?
Use a resizer that regenerates the color palette after scaling. Our tool uses a two-stage pipeline: Lanczos scaling for sharp edges, then palettegen + paletteuse to rebuild an optimized 256-color palette with dithering. This preserves far more detail than naive scaling, and animation timing and loops are kept intact.
04Can I compress a GIF to a specific file size?
Yes. The Compress GIF tool lets you set a target file size (for example 512KB for a Discord sticker or 16MB for WhatsApp) and automatically adjusts colors, frame rate, and dimensions to hit it while preserving as much quality as possible.
05How do I resize a GIF for Discord?
Discord limits regular uploads to 20MB on free accounts (raised from 10MB in August 2026), custom emoji to 256KB at 128x128 pixels, and stickers to 512KB at exactly 320x320 pixels. Our Discord preset applies the right dimensions and compression automatically — see the GIF Resizer for Discord page for a full guide.
06Will my GIF keep its animation after resizing?
Yes. The resizer processes every frame and preserves frame timing, loop settings, and transparency. Your resized GIF plays exactly like the original, just at the new dimensions and a smaller file size.
07Does resizing a GIF make the file smaller?
Usually, yes. A GIF stores every pixel of every frame, so halving the width and height leaves about a quarter of the pixels to encode. The saving is rarely exactly 75%, because GIF compression depends on colors and motion, but shrinking the dimensions is the single most effective way to cut size. If the result is still too big, run it through the GIF compressor or convert it to MP4.
08How do I resize a GIF without stretching it?
Keep "Lock aspect ratio" on and change only the width (or only the height); the other side follows. When you need a different shape, such as a square from a wide clip, choose Crop to fill (trims the edges) or Pad to fit (adds transparent borders) instead of Stretch.
09How big a GIF can I resize?
The resizer accepts GIFs up to 50MB. Because the work happens in your browser's memory, files under about 30MB process most reliably; on a phone, or with very long animations, close other tabs first.
10Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. This is a privacy-first tool: all GIF processing happens locally in your browser via WebAssembly. Your files are never uploaded, stored, or analyzed, and closing the tab clears everything from memory.
